Assessment of the environmental impact of polymeric membrane production

Abstract Polymeric membranes are important in advanced separation technologies because of their high efficiency and low environmental impact. However, procedures for membrane production far from sustainable environmentally friendly. This work presents a life cycle assessment the impact fabricating 1000 m2 hollow fiber polymeric membranes. Membrane materials considered include most popular fossil- bio-based polymers current use, i.e., polysulfones, polyvinylidene fluoride, cellulose acetate. Solvents use polymer dope solution included polar aprotic solvents (N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N, N-dimethylacetamide, dimethylformamide) that widely used industry an alternative green solvent (ethylene carbonate). The impacts on global warming, marine ecotoxicity, human carcinogenic non-carcinogenic toxicity, land potential, fossil resource scarcity were analyzed. Additionally, sustainability cost resulting replacing fossil-based with or substituting toxic was investigated. Hot spots process identified, measures to reduce proposed.
